Arsilda, Regina Di Ponto is Vivaldi’s fourth opera. First performed in at Teatro Sant’Angelo in Venice, its author’s ambition was to establish his nascent. The libretto was by Domenico Lalli, who had provided the words for Ottone in Villa three years earlier, inand was to collaborate with Vivaldi on several later vibaldi.
According to the New Grove OperaLalli was responsible for the first comic opera to be seen in Venice; to judge from Arsildahe furnished a link between the Shakespearian juxtaposition arxilda seriousness and comedy in Monteverdi and Cavalli, and the formality, derived from Corneille and Racine, of opera seria.
The story is complex and wholly unbelievable. Lisea and Tamese are the twin children of the queen of Cilicia.

Barzane is betrothed to Lisea. On a visit to Pontus, Tamese and Barzane fall in love with Arsilda, she chooses Tamese, and the two men fall out. Vivaldi responded to this farrago with a succession of reasonably concise arias.
The longest, at five minutes, is for Tamese: Her arwilda aria at the end of Act 1 features two obbligato harpsichords, to charming effect. Lucia Sciannimanico and Joseph Cornwell stand out in a uniformly good cast.
The playing is light and airy and the speeds are well judged. The translation of the libretto and notes stand up, ar.
