Games Workshop September Length: Jurgen is a great bodyman for Cain, and a great everyman character. Retreating upstairs and eventually to the rooftop, Jurgen spots re-inforcements in the form of Tje arriving and driving off the Genestealer horde. The perfect combination of humour, sci-fi and fantasy.

The Emperor’s Finest Novel. There was however slight damage to the book between the cover and it’s spine.
Honestly the first book was good and the latter two dragged, but I am still a big fan of Cain and will definitely pick up the next omnibus. He frequently refers to such experiences as invaluable as they taught him to fight or more frequently, run away from the enemies of the Imperium.

It’s a must read. Since these covers also portray Cain in various heroic poses, and in the thick of the action, many readers take this artwork as a deliberate joke on Cain’s public image as a hero of the Imperium, in contrast to how he describes himself in his memoirs.
Having to deal with Ddefender on the surface, unseen horrors in the dark depths of the planet and the freezing temperature of the planet itself that seem to try to strangle the life out of the commissar while only boosting the morale of his Valhallans, Cain must once again make his way through another adventure of bowel-clenching terror.
Other books in this series. The first two books of this omnibus were better.

The Beguiling Short Story. Like Horatio Hornblower, only Army. The other two novels are very well done as well.
Sure, lots of people die and there’s much blood and mayhem, but Cain’s world-weary cynicism is a bit of welcome fresh air.

Deciding for once that he would choose a menial mission instead defeneer be assigned a lethal one, Cain, leaving Jurgen behind to handle office affairs, is sent to rendezvous with a Reclaimers battle barge in the Interitus system with the eventual destination the Viridian System.
Confronted with the powers of Chaos and hordes of alien foes, our intrepid Commissar seeks to sidestep danger and talk his way out of trouble.
The Magos’ target is Interitus Prime, a dead world which has something of archeotech interest to them. Old Soldiers Never Die Novella. Cain, having observed the tendency of many members of the Commissariat to fall victim to “accidental” friendly fireprefers to lead by example and encouragement instead of fear, and has gained a reputation for charismatic leadership, self-effacing heroism and concern for the common trooper.
Passing away of natural causes, he was buried with full military honours—though, due to the many false allegations of his death, there is a standing order that Cain remain listed on active duty at all times, which has not been revoked even though he is documentably dead and interred.
The closest to doing so would probably be Amberley Vail, not only due to her stewardship of his memoirs but through over a century of both professional and romantic entanglement.
The truth, as presented in the novels, is that Cain is the sort of person he himself is supposed to execute: As the forces of Chaos overwhelm Perlia, Cain is forced to command the defense of the planet and hope that his luck doesn’t run out The only way out would be to rally them and fight back to Imperial-held territories. Another great entry in the Warhammer 40k universe and the Ciaphas Cain saga.
A coward who inadvertently saves the day, and slowly becomes the hero he pretends to be. That said, it’s also a lot more of the same.
